Dr Mathias Wittinghofer, born in 1974, studied and received his doctorate in law in Münster/Westf., second state examination at the Higher Regional Court in Frankfurt/M., is double-qualified as a Rechtsanwalt in Germany and as a solicitor in England and Wales. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb) and was a member of the European Branch Committee. He is, among others, also a member of the German Arbitration Institution (DIS), the Austrian Arbitration Association (ArbAut), the Swiss Arbitration Association (ASA), the International Association of Defense Counsel (IADC) and is a recognized expert at PRIME Finance and a panelist at Vienna International Arbitration Center (VIAC), the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration and the Netherlands Arbitration Institute (NAI).
In more than 20 years as a partner in international commercial law firms, Mathias Wittinghofer has gained experience in all types of commercial state court litigations and national and international arbitration proceedings, with a particular focus on capital market and post-M&A disputes, both as a party representative and as an arbitrator. In addition, Mathias Wittinghofer has acted both as counsel and as arbitrator in joint venture disputes, in corporate D&O liability matters and in intellectual property cases, including patents, utility models and designs. Mathias Wittinghofer also represents and advises parties with regard to cartel follow-on damage claims. His experience in arbitration includes appearing as an expert on German arbitration law in foreign court proceedings.
Mathias Wittinghofer has completed the specialist course to become a specialist lawyer (Fachanwalt) for banking and capital markets law, has published several articles on banking and financial law as well as international arbitration, and has given numerous lectures on both topics. He is also a lecturer in international arbitration at the Goethe University in Frankfurt.
In December 2023, Mathias Wittinghofer joined international business law firm Gowling WLG in its Frankfurt office as Head of Dispute Resolution Germany.
Mathias Wittinghofer is married and has two daughters. In his spare time he enjoys cardio workouts, plays the saxophone and rides a motorcycle.
